Kitchen Cabinet Hardware

Kitchen Cabinet Hardware

Today I’d like to write about kitchen cabinet hardware. It’s not all equal! In your kitchen cabinetry design you should look at all of the project or have a kitchen designer that tells you up front what is included! Let’s look at the cabinet door hinge. This is probably the most frustrating if it goes out of alignment. The most important question to ask is, “who makes it?”, “what type of adjustments does it have?” The best hinge will be, what is called in the industry “a six-way adjustable hinge”. By this I mean you can literally adjust the door in 6 different directions…up and down…side to side…and in and out. It a standard with me to feature these on all cabinet doors...

Drawer Slides

Now the next important piece of hardware is the drawer slides. Again what type? Who makes them? There are countless types out there and everyone claiming to be the best. I personally like the under-mount slide that has a soft close or self closing feature with, full extension for complete drawer access, smooth high quality ball bearing performance and 100 pound weight capacity. . I use this type in all my designs and all the drawers...including the all the roll-outs. Check with your designer and see if this is an extra or does it come standard. Allot of designers charge extra here! To find or just do some research on what is being supplied with your new kitchen cabinets check out the Rockler catalog...It is absolutely a look though, so you understand the different types of hardware before you say "yes" to that new dream kitchen...Enjoy!

Window Blinds

Motorized Window Blinds and Their Advantages

03 Aug

Shirtless Roofer in Jeans w/ Tool BeltAt present, motorized window blinds are considered as one of the most contemporary window products available in the market. They are different from other window coverings designed before. They can be managed, opened, and closed by using a remote control to either obstruct or permit the light in your space. Be sure to carefully understand the topic of discount window treatments, before beginning your project.

With standard window shades, you are required to spin the wand and pull the cords to control the sun rays that penetrate your room. For the most part, the window coverings with the wand do not entirely block the sun therefore they are not as efficient in light control. With motorized window treatments, you can sit down and relax with your family and watch a program without having to deal with glares on the TV screen.

If you take pleasure in watching movies in a room that was constructed with numerous windows, you are very lucky.  If you have saved enough money for window coverings, you can eliminate the hassle of switching the wand since you can always utilize the remote control to open and close the window blinds and shades. Take advantage of this mechanism and save time in doing other significant chores and tasks while you are at home. Many folks find decorating windows to be most rewarding.

my window blinds

Even though standard blinds are great window shades to begin with, having them installed with a remote control will make your life easier.

Placing Motorized Window Blinds

You might initially anticipate that remote control window coverings are complicated to install. But, you’ll be very glad to find that the process of installing these treatments is very similar to the installation of common shades. Because they are wireless, you will not experience problems of the wires getting twisted. They are very easy to program as well as control, so you’ll not deal with issues of ineffectively controlling the sunlight.

The remote control blinds can be operated from fifty feet away. This feature gets rid of the predicament of standing and moving when you are resting comfortably and contentedly near the blinds. With this tool, you just have to push a button and multiple coverings will close or open promptly.

Installing remote control window blinds is a surefire way to improve your way of life when it comes to house cleaning. Since you save a considerable amount of time and energy, you can take that time to bond and take care of your kids. These window shades also restrain the stress of household cleaning and maintenance to the minimum.

Live your Life as if Everything is a Miracle | Goodlife ZEN

miracle moth
A guest post by Arvind Devalia of Make It Happen and author of Get the Life you Love
Do you believe that life is miraculous? Are you waiting for a miracle to happen in your life?
Just imagine what it would be like to live your life as if everything is a miracle.
“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as if everything is.” ~ Albert Einstein
Simetimes people look for some kind of miracle when their life is in a fix. Other times, people may pray for a miracle when a loved one is seriously ill or when they face a life threatening challenge.
I remember praying for a miracle when I felt I hadn’t done well in a school exam. Somehow I did pass and that was my first personal experience of my own miracle, albeit a tiny one.
In the recent Haiti earthquake, there were many “miracles” of afflicted people surviving for many days under the rubble without food or water.
“The invariable mark of wisdom is to see the miraculous in the common”Ralph Waldo Emerson
What’s a miracle and how does one recognise one?
Wikipedia gives us a number of interpretations of what we by a miracle:-
  • An unexpected event attributed to divine intervention.
  • A fortuitous event.
  • Any statistically unlikely but beneficial event, such as the survival of a natural disaster.
  • An event which is regarded as “wonderful” regardless of its likelihood, such as birth.
  • Survival of a terminal illness.
  • Escaping a life threatening situation.
  • Beating the odds.
  • Some “coincidences”.
In all of the above, the common thing is some unlikely or unexpected occurence,  or something that just seems so incredible such as the birth of a child.
I have never witnessed the miracle of a child being born but a few years ago, I was lucky enough to be just outside the hospital maternity where a friend was giving birth.
I heard some faint crying and then 20 minutes later, the beaming father invited me in to see their newly arrived baby son. And there he lay cradled next to his mother, with his eyes wide open and looking as if he had always been there. It was one of the most beautiful and miraculous moments of my life – I can’t even imagine what it would have been like for the proud father.
miracle of a baby
Just how did that little baby boy happen?
“I am realistic – I expect miracles”Wayne Dyer
In reality, everything around us is a miracle if only we can learn to see and recognise these miracles.
By living your life as if everything is a miracle, every moment becomes something to savour and live in awe of. You naturally get to feel great appreciation and gratitude for your life, knowing that you are blessed with such miracles all around.
To help you become more present to all the miracles in your life – I have split them up into 5 specific categories.
As you read the remainder of this post, I invite you to treat this as your own personal journey into the world of miracles. After every section, please pause for a few seconds, breathe deeply a couple of times and simply become present to that miracle.
Lets begin our journey:-
1. The miracle of life.
The greatest miracle is that you are alive and able to engage in this conversation with me. Just think about it – how is it that a mass of flesh and blood is able to partake and experience what we call life? What allows us to experience the world through our senses?
If you have never thought about your very life as a miracle, please take a pause right now.
What is it that makes your blood go through your body – and what’s that universal intelligence that makes you tick?
Isn’t it a miracle that somehow life evolved on this planet we call earth, which just happens to be the right distance from our star and where during the course of billions of years, just the right conditions came about for some hydrogen and carbon molecules to gel together and finally evolve into you and me?
I am giving myself permission to repeat what I just said here, since I am so in awe – just how is it that a soup of organic materials somehow evolved into the wonder of you and me?
It all seems to happen like magic – and yet we hardly ever pause to reflect on the biggest miracle of all.
Life – our greatest miracle and gift – and even more reason for you to appreciate it every day.
“Each of my days are miracles. I won’t waste my day; I won’t throw away miracle” -
Kelley Vicstrom
2. The miracle of love
miracle of love
After the miracle of life, the greatest miracle is that of love.
But what is love?
Love is much greater than what we feel romantically. It is what makes us sing, dance and makes us human.
“Love doesn’t make the world go around, it just makes the ride worthwhile.” – Franklin
P. Jones
Love is the most amazing thing in our lives. It is what makes us human, what makes life worth living – in the grander scheme of things, nothing else truly matters. The size of our homes, bank balances, the beauty of our partner, the speed of our car – all those things pale into insignificance when we face the miracle of love.
“Where there is great love there are always miracles” – Willa Cather
Love leads to other miracles such as kindness. Have you noticed how great you feel afterwards when you have done someone a kind deed?
Through the miracle of our love, we can indeed transform the world – even a hug, a loving touch or just a smile can cause the miracle of healing others.
There are so many simple things we can all do on a daily basis to bring more love into our lives. Together we can all make this an even more beautiful and miraculous world than it already is.
So from today onwards, appreciate and acknowledge all the love around you and in you. Look for ways of spreading your love through compassion and making a practical difference to those around you.
3. The miracle of your body
To experience this thing we call life, we need our bodies to function as well as possible. Our bodies somehow sustain themselves, grow, repair and fight to stay alive till the very end.
There are trillions of chemical reactions and exchanges going on within us every second and everything seems to run like clockwork. Even when disease or decay sets in, our bodies continue to strive and sustain themselves almost like magic.
The durability of our body is a miracle in itself – I remember when my first nephew was born a few weeks prematurely and he spent the first month of his life in an incubator.
It was heart-breaking to see this little guy, a tiny bag of skin and bones fighting for dear life and getting stronger day by day, ounce by ounce. Experiencing something like that sure opens you up to the miracle of life – and also makes you realise that perhaps there really is something much bigger than us out there and indeed within us.
From today onwards, why not commit to take great care of your body?
You only have to take some simple and practical self-care steps and your body will begin to miraculously heal itself and sustain you for the rest of your life.
4. The miracle of nature
the miracle of life
Where does one even begin to extoll the sheer beauty of our natural world?
Let’s start with one of the main symbols of beauty in our society – the majestic flower. Have you ever looked at a beautiful flower closely and failed to be moved by its magnificence and symmetry?
“The miracles of nature do not seem miracles because they are so common. If no one had ever seen a flower, even a dandelion would be the most startling event in the world” – Unknown Author
A flower is but just one example of all the wonderful nature that makes up our earth and indeed beyond the earth. Look at the sky this evening and marvel at all the twinkling stars all around us.
Just how do those points of light just stay there? And who put them up there?
Everything in nature is so beautifully symmetrical and perfect – it is almost like a universal master craftsman or craftswoman was at work.
From today onwards, please spend some time in nature daily and simply appreciate the miracle of what’s around you – from the humble ant to the majestic oak. And then for the rest of your life, be in continuous awe of the nature around you.
miracle ant
5. The miracle of your creativity
Only a few years ago, before the advent of the internet, it would have been impossible to even envisage you and I having this conversation via the medium of the blogosphere.
And yet today, we can send out a single message to thousands of people around the world in seconds.
As a species, we are incredibly creative and intelligent, and sometimes there seems no end to what we are capable of.
You are capable of so much – and probably a lot more than what you are currently doing. You can literally create your own miracles – if you choose to do so.
From my perspective, the challenge really is to channel this creativity into something that benefits the greater good.
So from today onwards, put your own creative gifts to work – and create your own miracles to make the world a better place.
“I have found in life that if you want a miracle you first need to do whatever it is you can do – if that’s to plant, then plant; if it is to read, then read; if it is to change, then change; if it is to study, then study; if it is to work, then work; whatever you have to do. And then you will be well on your way of doing the labor that works miracles.” - Jim Rohn
It’s in your hands to see life as a miraculous experience.
miracle of nature
Make the rest of your life a miracle
Your journey of seeing the world as a miracle has only just begun. From today onwards, your eyes and the other senses have been opened up.
See everything around you as the miracle that it really is – and your life will never be the same again.

8 Gardening Blunders and the Ways to Fix Them

8 Gardening Blunders and the Ways to Fix Them

We often see fashion blunders on TV. We may even hear ourselves giving opinions about them. But do you actually realize that blunders can even happen right in your front yard? Whether you think that your garden looks good or not, it really doesn't matter. If everything doesn't work, your whole garden will not work. We enumerate top gardening blunders and the ways to fix them:

1. Grass is not greener. This ranks number 1. Why? Most gardens have lawn, but one may be slightly greener than the other. If your lawn looks more than the soil underneath, it is time to reassess your watering, fertilizing and mowing schedule. Think where you have gone wrong and make the necessary adjustments on the areas mentioned. If nothing happens, replacing your entire lawn is a better alternative. Consider other ground covers such as periwinkle and thyme. Ask your local nursery for a possible option.
2. Tools and clutter are everywhere. They may be useful objects, but if they are stacked in your garage because you think they are not worth the storage, they don't just look like junk, they are junk. Go over them one by one and determine whether you want to keep them or not. Your criteria when deciding if they deserve the trip to dump or not is simple: Ask yourself, do you specific plans for them?
3. Your home and garden can be seen from the road. There are several short- and long-term solutions to create some privacy. One quick-fix solution is to build a concrete wall that would separate your garden from the side walk. For a longer, much appealing look, planting fast-growing shrubs is a good idea.
4. Weeds invasion. Weeds problem can be solved by keeping your lawn regularly maintained. Check for weeds as often as you can. Dig the weeds out by hand and keep the weed from re-growing by seeding the empty areas of your lawn.
5. Limited space. If your problem is space, then here's one idea that can definitely help you maximize every square inch of your garden: think vertical. Create a sense of lush greenery by using wall space, arbors and trellises to allow plants to climb upwards.
6. Where's your home? If shrubs have swallowed your home, then a hedge clipper comes in handy. Cut everything that is blocking your way. Seriously, you want a garden, not a house in the middle of the forest.
7. Dry spell in winter. Most garden plants do not survive the winter temperature. Hence they die. When planning for a garden, think of the plants that can grow year round. Or you can always include evergreens and plants with winter interests.
8. Fences are falling apart. Fences are not just to separate your property from your neighbor's. They also add to the overall look of your garden. Make sure that you maintain the looks of your fences like the way you keep your plants.

Freeware outdoes Windows' built-in system tools

Freeware outdoes Windows' built-in system tools

Most standard Windows maintenance tasks can be accomplished using the utilities included with the OS itself — but that doesn't mean those tools are your best option.

Whether you're looking for an easier way to browse the image files in a folder, create a restore point, revert to XP's Classic Start Menu, or customize your file associations, there's a (free) app for that.

PC users have no shortage of things to complain about. But we can thank our lucky stars for one thing: free software that's constantly being created, revised, and improved. I unearthed a handful of new or recently revised system tools that make your computing life a whole lot easier without costing you a red cent.

Skim through graphics and PDF files in a jiffy

If you can get past the program's clumsy name, the Scientific and Technical Documentation Utility (STDU) Explorer is a file manager that beats Windows Explorer by providing superior preview and thumbnail options. The program is designed especially for previewing and managing such image-file formats as .psd, .bmp, .png, .gif, .jpg, and .wmf. You can also use STDU Explorer to view Acrobat PDF files and DjVu books.

The file manager lets you skim quickly through folders chock-full of image and PDF files. Finding the one you need is facilitated by STDU Explorer's thumbnail previews, which you can enlarge, shrink, or otherwise customize on the fly. (See Figure 1.)

STDU Explorer thumbnail resizer
Figure 1. Use STDU Explorer's slider control to resize file thumbnails on the fly.

The program's preview pane is great for flipping through multipage files, and its familiar folder tree and Office-like toolbar simplify navigation and basic file-management tasks. One useful feature missing from the utility is an address bar for entering folder paths, but otherwise, STDU Explorer is a winner that works with all Windows versions.

You'll find more information about the program and a download link on the product's page.

The Secrets of YouTube Marketing Revealed

I bet you only use YouTube when your 10-year-old daughter wants you to watch some cute pet videos, right?
But you would never think of using it to market your business.
If I told you that YouTube has a ‘Science & Technology’ category, a ‘How To’ category, and an ‘Education’ category, can you begin to see the possibilities?
Whether you work for a high-tech company, a hardware store, or a university, you might want to learn more about using YouTube to publicize your operation.

Why YouTube Marketing?

Because YouTube is all about video broadcasting. And videos are perfect for showing technical equipment, demonstrating a procedure or giving parents of prospective students a virtual tour of the campus.
Videos can even show a “talking head” touting the benefits of any product or service.Just like a TV commercial. But you have up to 10 minutes to make your case, not 30 seconds. And it won’t cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars.
This is not your father’s TV. It’s not 97 million Americans watching the Super Bowl on one channel on one day and seeing whatever ads the station selects, whether they want to see them or not.
This is 400 million people worldwide actively seeking information on an estimated 6 million to 9 million YouTube channels every month. Yes, I saidmillions of channels. And watching what THEY want to see.
As of 2009, approximately 100 million Americans watched about 6 billion videos on YouTube each month. Americans performed more than 2.9 billion searches on YouTube every month.
In fact, YouTube accounted for 79% of all US visits to 60 online video sites in 2009. Google Video was #2, with a 4.6% market share.

What Businesses Can Do on YouTube

Remember, social media is about monitoring and participating in the conversations about companies, products and services. And finding evangelists and influencers who can help you build your business.
Your customers are already having these conversations on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube — wouldn’t you like to know what they’re saying? Wouldn’t you like to find those evangelists?
Here are some things businesses can do in a YouTube video, according to the book YouTube and Video Marketing an Hour a Day by Greg Jarboe:
• Publicize a news event about your company.
• Introduce a new product or service.
• Demonstrate a new product or service.
• Distribute a speech given by the company president, CEO or VP.
• Record celebrity endorsements of your product or service.
• Show conference presentations, exhibits and speeches
You can even advertise on YouTube. You can place your own ads on videos that match your criteria. It can be a traditional Google text ad or a video ad to the right of the video player. Or you can place the ad in the lower part of the video itself as a semi-transparent overlay while the video plays.
You can also create a Brand Channel complete with your logo that gives you many more options than a regular channel. It’s expensive, but “YouTube gets a Super Bowl–sized audience month in and month out,” according to Jarboe.
Yes, more than 147 million US Internet users watched an average of 100 videos per viewer in January 2009. That’s a bigger audience than the 97.5 million people who watched the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in the 2008 Super Bowl!
And it’s not just 10-year-old girls. Sixty-two percent of YouTube viewers are 35 and older. Almost half have a college degree and a similar percentage have incomes of $75,000 or more.

Marketing Will Never Be the Same

Jarboe’s book could be used as the textbook for a college-level course in YouTube marketing. He says it will take you eight months to get through it, but don’t panic!
The first month will go very quickly because only weeks one and two have any “homework.” Basically, just get on YouTube and look around.
Weeks three and four are essentially an outline of the rest of the book. You can probably finish the entire first month in a few hours.
Likewise for week four in the second month. There is no homework, you just have to read one or two pages each day. Piece of cake!
But then it starts getting technical:
• Month three: You watch top-rated videos so you can learn how to create a “viral” video.
• Month four: You learn the basics of creating and customizing a YouTube channel.
• Month five: You learn about engaging with and contributing to the YouTube community.
• Month six: You learn the principles of digital video production.
• Month seven: You learn about becoming a YouTube Partner and advertiser.
• Month eight: Covers YouTube Insight, TubeMogul and other metrics.
A YouTube channel is the equivalent of a Facebook profile. You create the page and put whatever you want on it. But instead of lots of text, you put lots of videos. Videos of all those things that businesses can do on YouTube.
And YouTube allows viewers to rate your videos, favorite them and share them with friends. They can also upload a video response to your videos, add comments and subscribe to your channel.
But be forewarned! A TubeMogul study of the viewing of 188,055 YouTube videos found that half of the viewers stopped watching a video after only 60 seconds.
Ouch! Do you know what that means?
It means you shouldn’t even consider creating a compelling video until you engage the services of an experienced copywriter. A copywriter who can write a video script that grabs your prospects’ attention and never lets go.

The Purpose of Life

Detachment from STUFF

A Guest Post by Tony Teegarden of

Consider for a moment, what it means to live a life of detachment and what comes to your mind first? Ask yourself what do you feel at first thought?

Do you interpret detachment to mean you are disconnected from:

  • people
  • relationships
  • your emotions
  • society
  • physical stuff

It’s important to measure and understand what your current belief around the idea of detachment is before you move forward with this post. Your attachment or belief around a particular definition is what ties your emotions to that particular event. Thus causing an experience whether good or bad.

So what is S.T.U.F.F.? I define stuff as, Scarcity That Undermines Freedom & Family.

I find it’s not so much the stuff that we accumulate that binds us, but the mental and emotional attachmentsurrounding the stuff that can cause us suffering such as our lack of emotional freedom and deeper connections with people.

Scarcity is a powerful human emotion that can hold us prisoner if we’re not aware of it. Our attachment to stuffis a form of scarcity that can effect our relationship with not only others but ourselves.

So what happens when you and I release any attachment to stuff and allow ourselves to live in the here and now, without scarcity on our minds? I call it emotional freedom and the opportunity to find or live our purpose. Remember the movie Pursuit of Happiness? It wasn’t called the pursuit of stuff was it? This is a form of detachment I’m going to cover.

Practicing Detachment

Now I’m the first to admit I like nice stuff. I admit I have a bit of a man crush on a Bentley GT CoupĂ©, however I don’t have an emotional attachment to the car. I simply have an appreciation for the car as I would an amazing sunset. I have the exact same appreciation of those sunsets. It’s crazy to think I’d ever actually own a sunset isn’t it? Imagine if I had an emotional attachment to the sunset? Every time the sun went down I’d be a basket case. That would be pretty nuts of me, right?

Consider your same appreciation with physical stuff in your life and imagine not being so attached to it.

You can practice detachment through meditation where you find your connection within to all that is through out. For me this anchors me in my emotional freedom. It grounds me and I realize I don’t need stuff, I just like the experiences the stuff can provide. There are other ways you can practice detachment in your life. Some small and some may seem big.

“It’s not what I’m willing to learn or gain that will move me where I want to be, but what I’m willing to let go of that will allow me the freedom to be what I am.”

I got rid of traditional TV & cable going on 2 years ago now. I was willing to let go of my emotional connection to it and release it. Many people couldn’t imagine living without their TV shows however I can’t imagine wasting that much time watching them anymore. The mental clutter that it seemed to cause was only apparent after I stopped the steady diet of it.

For example: The attachment to be in front of the TV set at a particular time and night of the week was a small freedom unto itself. When I realized I didn’t require the distraction anymore I felt an emotional freedom which felt much better than the comfort of sitting in a chair and vegging out. I still enjoy a good movie night by all means. I’m not saying entertainment isn’t important however the steady diet of TV, like food or drugs, can be and usually is abused.

When you find yourself using something like TV as a distraction it’s time to detach yourself from it. Be aware of the scarcity that comes up, be mindful of it and gently send it on it’s way.

The 7 Benefits of Practicing Detachment from S.T.U.F.F.

  1. Loving-Can there but a better result of detachment? Can you imagine the families that have argued over the stuff of loved ones who have passed away? Can you imagine the deeper connections and love that could be replaced if everyone practiced detachment of stuff? Or what about the father who spends too much time at the office away from his family because he’s attempting to create more stuff in their lives? I remember hearing you can always get more money but you can’t more time. Love while you can.
  2. Laughing-Imagine if you were to play more games together with your spouse or family, or play in home karaoke, or charades? Go for more walks after work or play in the park with the family? Could laughter ensue? Of course it could! If you give it the space to flourish, your bound to have fun. The emotional freedom allows for so much more laughter.
  3. Connection-Consider the ability to connect with more people and create deeper friendships. I can’t tell you how many times when I’ve broken out of my routine I’ve ended up meeting someone or a group of people that I’ve had an awesome connection with. New can be scary to some personalities but connection is something everyone wants. Give yourself the room to experience it.
  4. New Experiences-I’m not saying you have to go out and bungee jump or go skydiving (Which I’ve done and it totally rocks) but think about this for a moment. You don’t want the stuff really. You want the new experiences that stuff provides you. That’s ok, when detaching from the pursuit of stuff you’re able to enjoy the ride along the way and yes you’ll probably end up with stuff anyway but without the attachment to it. Identify the experience you want to have and realize the stuff is just a means to the new experience.
  5. Emotional Freedom-This is a place of zero state for me. It’s where some of my best creativity comes. Because I continue poor out I have more room to receive in. It has taken much work to be here but the work is worth it. This is really the result I believe more people desire, not the stuff in their life but the freedom.
  6. Harmonious Living-Have you had one of those days where everything just seemed to go right? Where your relationships just seem to be in a great place? This very well can be a result of detachment of expectation and just being.
  7. Healthy Body & Mind-It may go without being said that with the emotional baggage many carry around this has a huge effect on peoples health. What happens to the mind has an effect on the body. When you release this energy and release the attachment to stuff you experience the emotional freedom you really want. That’s the experience you really desire. This is the place where you start to nurture your body because your mind is released from stuff.

So ask yourself what you’d be willing to detach yourself from, even if for a short while, to test the emotional freedom waters. If you have family share with them what you’re desired outcomes are, like the 7 outcomes above, and I’ll bet you can get their buy in. Image how cool that would be.

10 Things Every Home Business Should Know!

When you make the decision to earn income from the internet you will need to go through a set up process to be ready for business.
Following are the basic steps in setting up for home business success.
1. Attitude
The key to your business success is your attitude.
Treat your business like a business.
This is critical whether you are working part-time or full-time. One of my colleagues is a mother who works from home around her family. She has always put her family first whilst at the same time developing her business. She says, “I work part-time, but I have a full-time attitude.”
Put another way, “If you have a hobby attitude you will have a hobby income, if you have a business attitude you will have a business income.”
You can be successful working part-time and you can be successful working full-time but it is highly unlikely that you will be successful working in your “spare time”.
2. Working Environment
A space that you can call your own, free from distractions for your scheduled time.
A comfortable chair and organized desk.
Stationery supplies as required. For example:
- pens
- highlighters
- stapler
- hole punch
- sticky tape
- note book(s)
- a simple filing system
- ring binders
- manilla folders
Consider the value of a broadband connection. Your time is valuable and a broadband connection can allow you to get more done in a given time frame.
3. Schedule
Develop a schedule that works for you, your family (or “significant others”) and your business. When you allot a block of time for work then use that time for work. Equally important is to schedule time for your other commitments – family time, self education ( reading, listening and viewing), “health time” (exercise, cooking and eating), and leisure time. During these other times don’t work. After all if one of the reasons to work from home is to spend more time with your family then you don’t want your working at home time to consume your family time.
You are working for yourself and your schedule (by your choice) is your “boss”. When you have people calling you or dropping around unexpectedly or maybe out-of-town visitors may want to catch up with you then you need to make a choice. Are you committed to your own business success? What will be your choice in these situations? Only you can decide what is important to you.
In a family environment you may need to negotiate with your partner and children to have your business time agreed upon, during which you will not be interrupted. Put this schedule prominently somewhere so all family members are aware of your work schedule.
4. Describe Your Business
Be able to describe your business concisely; a powerful one or two sentence description that someone can repeat in describing your business to others. A unique and memorable tag line can also be invaluable for promoting your business.
5. Know Your Product or Service
Once you have selected your product or service to sell, it may or may not be something that you use yourself but you need to know your product intimately. If you are selling ebooks then know the content and its value. If you are selling software then use it know it “inside out”. You will develop a reputation of providing quality information and because of your product knowledge you can become the preferred supplier.
It is not practical to use certain products (for example a woman may choose to sell man’s shoes or vice versa) in which case the seller won’t be a product user, however the seller can still know the benefits and features of the product intimately.
6. Administration
Use good record keeping practices.
This may involve a consultation with a tax advisor who can let you know about the optimal way to set up your financial records and what records need to be kept. Your advisor will also recommend record keeping systems and you can find out what software may simplify this aspect of your business. Additionally your obtain advice on the best arrangement for your bank accounts. You will most likely be advised to have a separate bank account.
You will also need to keep track of your various logins, usernames and passwords. A very handy little software tool for this is Treepad available as either the free Lite version (without password protection) or the commercial Plus or Biz versions. http://www.treepad.com
There are other useful tools for this also from a simple paper notebook to free and commercial password keepers. One popular solution is Roboform that will remember your login details and can automatically fill out your login and other registration forms. http://www.roboform.com
7. Computer Protection
Your computer is the lifeline to your business dealings and must be protected including the data that is stored.
You need a virus scanner, personal firewall, anti-spyware and anti-adware and preferably an email scanner with the ability to delete suspect of spam email from the server before it is downloaded to your computer.
Some suggestions are:
AVG Anti-Virus: http://www.grisoft.com
Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org
Microsoft Anti-Spyware:  www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Adaware: http://www.lavasoft.com/
Mailwasher Email Scanner: http://www.mailwasher.net
8. A Domain Name
You will most likely need a domain name for your business and one cost effective registrar is GoDaddy, http://www.godaddy.com.
9. Payment Processing
You will need a way to process credit cards; that may be using services such as:
- PayPal https://www.paypal.com
- Storm Pay http://www.stormpay.com
- 2 Checkout http://www.2checkout.com
- Clickbank http://www.clickbank.com or others.
This is the most economical way to get started. Once your business picks up you may need to look into your own merchant account for credit card transactions.
Consideration may also be given to other forms of online currency such as eGold http://www.egold.com
10. Email accounts
Once you have your own domain you can use an associated email account. This can further assist in the promotion of your business and promotes a more professional business image.
As a final comment on continuing in your internet business, conduct your business ethically, provide extraordinary service and be proud to put your name to the products or services that you are selling and you will be on track to developing a sustainable long term internet business.
